The Local SEO Starter Guide for Small Businesses (No Tech Skills Required)

Ranking on Google doesn't require an SEO agency or a technical background. Here's the simple 5-step process we use on every website we build.

Local SEO is how Google decides which businesses to show when someone nearby searches for your service. The good news: for local businesses, the basics aren't complicated — and they work fast.

1

Claim & Optimize Your Google Business Profile

This is step zero. Go to business.google.com, claim your listing, fill in every single field — hours, photos, services, description. Businesses with complete profiles rank significantly higher in local map results.

2

Use Location Keywords on Your Website

Your page titles, headings, and content should include your city and service. "Barber in Miami, FL" and "Best fade haircuts in Miami" tell Google exactly where you are and what you do. Don't just say "barber" — say "barber in [your city]."

3

Get Reviews — Consistently

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals. After every job or appointment, ask your customer to leave a Google review. Even 10 genuine 5-star reviews can push you to the top of local results in a less-competitive area.

4

Make Sure Your NAP is Consistent

NAP = Name, Address, Phone number. These need to be identical everywhere online — your website, Google profile, Yelp, Facebook. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your rankings.

5

Have a Fast, Mobile-Friendly Website

Google ranks mobile-friendly, fast-loading websites higher — especially in local search. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, you're being penalized. Every Cedar Digital website is built fast and mobile-first.
